Mindroling Monastery, located in Dranang County of Shannan Prefecture, is one of the six major monasteries of the Nyingma school (the oldest sect of Tibetan Buddhism, commonly known as the “Red Hat” sect). In Tibetan, “Mindroling” translates beautifully to “Place of Perfect Emancipation.” Unlike many Tibetan monasteries that cling to steep cliffs or sit atop high mountains, Mindroling is peacefully nestled in a gentle, lush valley surrounded by ancient trees and murmuring streams, creating an atmosphere of an isolated, tranquil paradise.
Highly esteemed in the Tibetan Buddhist world, Mindroling is universally recognized as the highest academic institution of the Nyingma tradition. It is not only a center for profound Buddhist teachings but also the premier academy for traditional Tibetan sciences, representing the pinnacle of astronomical calendar calculation, Tibetan medicine, and Tibetan calligraphy. For centuries, the official Tibetan calendar issued by the local government has been based entirely on the astronomical data calculated at Mindroling.
When mentioning Mindroling, one must highlight its famous “Mindroling Tibetan Incense.” Formulated strictly according to an ancient, rigorous secret recipe containing numerous precious medicinal herbs, this top-tier incense was historically produced exclusively for the Potala Palace and successive Dalai Lamas. Today, visitors to the monastery can still smell this unique, deeply soothing fragrance lingering in the valley air.
↺ History
Mindroling Monastery was founded in 1676 by the great Nyingma master and terton (treasure revealer) Minling Terchen Gyurme Dorje. As Gyurme Dorje was also one of the principal teachers of the Great 5th Dalai Lama, the monastery received tremendous support from the Tibetan local government right from its inception. Upon completion, it rapidly became the absolute core for preserving, compiling, and transmitting the ancient scriptures and rituals of the Nyingma lineage.
However, Mindroling’s history is also marked by severe turmoil. During the Dzungar Mongol invasion of Tibet in the early 18th century, the monastery suffered devastating destruction, with many precious statues and ancient texts lost to the flames. Fortunately, with generous patronage from the prominent Tibetan ruler Polhane and the 7th Dalai Lama, Mindroling was comprehensively rebuilt and restored, allowing this academic jewel of the Nyingma school to shine brilliantly once again.
Over more than 300 years, the eminent monks of Mindroling have made monumental contributions not only to religion but also to the preservation of Tibet’s unique medical, astrological, and artisanal heritage. Today, the traditional craft of making Mindroling Tibetan incense is officially recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage of China, a living legacy that continues to thrive.

How To Get There
Mindroling Monastery is located in Mindroling Village, Dranang County, Shannan City. It is approximately 15 kilometers from the Dranang county center, about 40 kilometers from the Shannan city center (Tsetang), and roughly 120 kilometers from the capital city of Lhasa.
The most convenient way to reach Mindroling is by chartered vehicle or self-driving. Departing from Lhasa, the drive along the Lhasa-Nyingchi Expressway or provincial highways toward Shannan takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. If departing from Tsetang, the drive takes only about 1 hour. The overall road conditions are excellent, with only the final short stretch entering the natural village and valley being a relatively narrow mountain road.
Visitors typically combine a visit to Mindroling Monastery with Samye Monastery — “Tibet’s First Monastery” — which also lies within Dranang County. The two monasteries are not far apart and both represent extraordinarily significant holy sites in the early development of Tibetan Buddhism, making them perfect for a combined full-day itinerary.
ⓘ Travel Tips
- Best Time: May through October is the best time to visit. During these months, the valley is lush with vegetation, birds sing among the flowers, and the climate is exceptionally pleasant. Because Mindroling does not attract huge crowds of tourists like the Potala Palace or Jokhang Temple, it is the absolute perfect choice if you are seeking a quiet place away from the hustle to deeply experience Tibetan religious culture.
- Most Valuable Souvenir: After your visit, it is highly recommended to purchase authentic "Mindroling Tibetan Incense" from the monastery's shop. Although it is priced slightly higher than ordinary incense due to its totally manual production and rare medicinal ingredients, it is undeniably the finest and most culturally representative authentic souvenir in all of Tibet.
- Cultural Etiquette & Photography: Photography is strictly prohibited inside almost all of the temple halls. Please respect local religious customs: take off your hat and sunglasses before entering chapels; always walk and spin prayer wheels in a clockwise direction; and maintain silence so as not to disturb the meditating monks, keeping flash photography turned off at all times.
- Altitude & Environment: Sitting at an altitude of approximately 3,550 meters in a relatively moist valley with good oxygen levels, and featuring mostly flat terrain that does not require strenuous climbing, the vast majority of visitors handle this location with ease. A thorough visit usually takes about 1 to 1.5 hours.
