Puma Yumco Lake, located in the southern part of Nagarze County in Shannan Prefecture, sits at an astonishing altitude of 5,010 meters, making it one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world. In Tibetan, “Puma” means “little girl” and “Yumco” translates to “jade lake,” coming together to form the deeply poetic name “Jade Lake of a Young Girl.” Closely embraced by the towering, 7,000-meter-high snow-capped peaks of Mount Kula Kangri (the highest mountain in Shannan), the lake’s incredibly pure waters radiate a solitary, cold beauty that feels utterly detached from the rest of the world.
What truly propelled Puma Yumco to global fame and made it a holy grail for extreme photographers and adventurous travelers is its ultimate winter spectacle: the “Blue Ice.” From January to late February, the brutal highland winter freezes the entire lake solid, creating a vast, boundless expanse of deep, translucent blue ice. The surface is crisscrossed with massive, spectacular white ice cracks, while deep within the frozen layers, strings of giant pearl-like bubbles are suspended in time — formed when methane gas released by aquatic plants freezes instantly before reaching the surface. This breathtaking phenomenon rivals or even surpasses the famous winter scenes of Russia’s Lake Baikal.
During the brief summer months, the lake transforms completely. The thawed waters reveal a profound, crystal-clear sapphire blue, surrounded by vibrant green alpine meadows where yaks and sheep graze peacefully — painting a picture of pure, vibrant pastoral life on the Snow Plateau.
↺ History
For thousands of years, Puma Yumco has been far more than just a beautiful landscape; it has been the lifeblood of the local nomadic people. Nestled on the lake’s shores is Tuiwa Village, which, sitting at approximately 5,070 meters, is widely recognized as the highest administrative village in the world. The herders of Tuiwa Village still maintain an ancient, heroic, and incredibly wise method of survival deeply tied to the lake’s natural cycles.
Every deep winter, when the lake freezes thick enough to walk on, the pastures on the shore become entirely depleted, threatening the flocks with starvation. However, the grass on the lake’s central island remains untouched and abundant. Selecting an auspicious day, the entire village works together directly on the mirror-like ice, sprinkling ashes and yak dung to create a non-slip path. Braving bone-piercing winds, they drive thousands of sheep across the frozen expanse to the island to survive the harsh winter. Just before the ice melts in early spring, they repeat this epic journey to bring the flock safely back to the mainland. This extraordinary feat is a magnificent hymn to human resilience in extreme environments.
Before modern roads were paved, Puma Yumco was like a shy maiden hidden deep within the snowy mountains, rarely visited by outsiders. It is only in recent years, as stunning photographs of its blue ice circulated online, that this secret realm stepped into the public eye, becoming the ultimate pilgrimage destination for Tibet winter tourism.

How To Get There
Puma Yumco is located in Nagarze County, Shannan City, situated in a sensitive border region near the Kingdom of Bhutan. Consequently, a Border Defense Permit (Border Pass) is absolutely mandatory for all visitors (the permit must specifically list “Nagarze County, Shannan”). The vast majority of travelers depart from Lhasa or continue south after visiting the famous Yamdrok Lake.
From Yamdrok Lake, driving southward along the paved highway toward the Sino-Bhutan border involves crossing extremely high mountain passes and takes about 2 to 3 hours to reach Puma Yumco. Along the way, travelers are treated to magnificent, close-up views of the formidable Kula Kangri mountain range.
It is strongly recommended to travel by chartered 4WD (four-wheel-drive) off-road vehicle. This is especially critical during the winter “blue ice” season, when the roads are frequently covered in heavy snow and treacherous black ice. Attempting this route is extremely dangerous for anyone without extensive experience driving in severe Tibetan winter conditions.
ⓘ Travel Tips
- Extreme Altitude Warning: The surface of Puma Yumco lies at a staggering 5,010 meters — higher than the Mount Everest Base Camp! The oxygen level here is alarmingly low, and the risk of severe altitude sickness is extremely high. You must carry ample supplemental oxygen (such as large oxygen cylinders) in your vehicle. Staying overnight here is strongly discouraged; you should descend promptly to sleep in Nagarze or Gyantse.
- Deadly Cold and Wind: If you are coming for the winter blue ice, prepare for temperatures plunging to -20°C (-4°F) or lower. The howling winds on the frozen lake act like invisible blades and will cut right through standard winter coats. You must wear top-tier, expedition-grade windproof and thermal gear — thick hardshells, heavy down jackets, windproof hats, heavy gloves, and neck gaiters are not optional.
- Ice Walking Safety: The blue ice is unimaginably slick. Standing, let alone walking, in regular shoes is nearly impossible and guarantees dangerous falls and potential bone fractures. A pair of slip-on ice cleats (crampons) is an absolute necessity for walking on the lake. Never walk on ice with visible, active cracking sounds or near the edges where the freeze may be incomplete.
- Narrow Viewing Window: The blue ice phenomenon is incredibly fleeting. The ice is usually only thick and clear enough from mid-January to mid-to-late February. Furthermore, if a heavy snowstorm occurs, the glorious blue ice will be completely buried under thick white snow, hiding the spectacle entirely.
