The Potala Palace is the most iconic landmark in Tibet and a must-visit attraction in Lhasa. Perched on Red Hill at an altitude of over 3,700 meters, it is the highest palace complex in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Originally serving as the winter residence of the Dalai Lama, the palace is a masterpiece of Tibetan architecture, combining religious, political, and cultural functions. Today, it stands as a symbol of Tibetan Buddhism and a highlight of any Tibet tour.
↺ History
The Potala Palace was first built in the 7th century by King Songtsen Gampo to celebrate his marriage to Princess Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty.
The current structure dates mainly to the 17th century, when the 5th Dalai Lama reconstructed and expanded it into a grand palace complex. The palace consists of two main sections:
- White Palace – Administrative and living quarters
Red Palace – Religious halls, chapels, and stupas
Inside, visitors can find thousands of statues, murals, scriptures, and the tomb stupas of past Dalai Lamas, making it one of the most important cultural treasures in Tibet.
