Jokhang Temple is the most sacred and important temple in Tibet, located in the heart of Lhasa’s old town. Often referred to as the “spiritual center of Tibet,” it attracts thousands of pilgrims every day who come to worship and perform traditional prostrations.
Built in the 7th century, Jokhang Temple is one of the oldest religious structures in Tibet and a UNESCO World Heritage Site (as part of the Potala Palace complex). The temple is renowned for housing the revered statue of Jowo Shakyamuni, believed to be the most sacred image of Buddha in Tibetan Buddhism.
Surrounded by the lively Barkhor Street pilgrimage circuit, the temple offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience authentic Tibetan culture and religious devotion.
↺ History
Jokhang Temple was constructed during the reign of King Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century. It was built to commemorate his marriages to Princess Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty and Princess Bhrikuti of Nepal.
According to historical records, the sacred Jowo Shakyamuni statue was brought to Tibet by Princess Wencheng from Chang’an (modern-day Xi’an), making Jokhang Temple a significant symbol of cultural exchange between Tibet and the Tang Dynasty.
Over centuries, the temple has been expanded and renovated multiple times, resulting in a unique architectural style that blends Tibetan, Chinese, Nepalese, and Indian influences.
