Drigung Til Monastery is one of the most important monasteries of the Drigung Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. Dramatically perched on a mountainside overlooking the Drigung Valley, it offers breathtaking views and a deeply spiritual atmosphere.

Unlike the busy monasteries in central Lhasa, this remote site provides a more authentic and tranquil experience. It is especially known for its connection to traditional Tibetan sky burial practices, making it a unique cultural destination for travelers seeking deeper insight into Tibetan beliefs and rituals.

History

Drigung Til Monastery was founded in the 12th century by Jigten Sumgön, the founder of the Drigung Kagyu school. It quickly became one of the most influential monasteries in Tibet and a major center for Buddhist teaching and meditation.

Throughout history, the monastery attracted large numbers of monks and practitioners, playing a key role in the development of the Kagyu tradition.

Although it has undergone periods of destruction and reconstruction, the monastery continues to serve as an active religious site and an important place of pilgrimage.
