Ramoche Temple, also known as “Xiao Zhao Temple,” is one of the most historically significant yet less crowded temples in Lhasa. Located in the old town near Barkhor Street, it is often referred to together with Jokhang Temple as the “Two Sacred Temples of Lhasa.”
Compared to the bustling Jokhang Temple, Ramoche Temple offers a quieter and more peaceful atmosphere, making it an ideal place for travelers who want to experience authentic Tibetan religious life without large crowds.
The temple features a unique blend of Tibetan and Chinese architectural styles, reflecting the rich cultural exchanges of ancient Tibet.
↺ History
Ramoche Temple was built in the 7th century during the reign of King Songtsen Gampo, around the same time as Jokhang Temple.
Historically, it was associated with Princess Bhrikuti of Nepal, and it once housed sacred Buddhist statues that played an important role in Tibetan religious history.
Over the centuries, the temple has undergone several reconstructions due to wars and natural damage. Today, it stands as a symbol of the cultural and religious fusion between Tibet and its neighboring regions.
