Reting Monastery is a hidden gem in Tibet, located in the remote mountains north of Lhasa. Surrounded by one of the rare high-altitude forests in Tibet—known as the Reting Forest—it offers a unique combination of spiritual heritage and natural beauty.

Unlike the more crowded monasteries in central Lhasa, Reting Monastery provides a शांत and off-the-beaten-path experience, ideal for travelers seeking tranquility, photography opportunities, and deeper cultural exploration.

History

Reting Monastery was founded in the 11th century by Dromtönpa, a prominent disciple of the great Buddhist master Atisha and a key figure in the Kadampa school of Tibetan Buddhism.

The Kadampa tradition later influenced the development of the Gelug school, making Reting Monastery an important historical link in Tibetan Buddhist evolution.

Throughout its history, the monastery served as a major religious and educational center, producing many respected scholars and practitioners. Despite periods of decline, it remains an important spiritual site today.
