↺ History
Ganden Monastery was founded in 1409 by Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. It is considered the earliest and most important monastery of this tradition.
After Tsongkhapa’s passing, his remains were enshrined in the monastery, making it a major pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists.
Throughout history, Ganden Monastery has served as a key center for Buddhist education and religious practice. It houses several monastic colleges where monks study philosophy, rituals, and scriptures.
Despite historical challenges, the monastery has been preserved and continues to play a vital role in Tibetan religious life today.
