Siling Tso, located in the border area between Shenza County and Bangge County of the Nagqu Prefecture, sits at an elevation of approximately 4,530 meters and covers an area of roughly 2,391 square kilometers. In recent years, due to accelerated glacial meltwater from global warming, Siling Tso has continuously expanded in surface area, surpassing Namtso to become the largest lake in Tibet and the second-largest saltwater lake in China (after Qinghai Lake). The lake has an irregular shape with an exceptionally long, meandering shoreline, and together with dozens of surrounding satellite lakes of varying sizes, it forms an enormous highland lake cluster.

The waters of Siling Tso display a deep, vivid sapphire blue that appears extraordinarily transparent and pure under sunlight. The lake is surrounded by the vast, open grassland steppe of northern Tibet, with flat terrain and an immensely far-reaching horizon. Due to its remote location and near-total absence of tourism development, Siling Tso retains an exceptionally pristine natural appearance. The lake area serves as a critical habitat and breeding ground for numerous rare bird species. During summer in particular, black-necked cranes, bar-headed geese, and brown-headed gulls gather in large numbers on the lake surface and its islands, making it an ideal destination for birdwatching enthusiasts.

History

The name “Siling Tso” translates from Tibetan as “Demon Lake of Shimmering Light.” According to Tibetan folklore, Siling was a fearsome demon that terrorized various regions across Tibet before being subdued and imprisoned beneath these waters by the great tantric master Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava). This religiously charged name reflects the ancient perception of northern Tibet’s harsh, unforgiving environment and the deep reverence people held toward the raw forces of nature.

Geologically, Siling Tso is one of the remnant lakes formed after the retreat of the ancient Tethys Sea—the vast prehistoric ocean that once covered the entire Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. In recent decades, changes in Siling Tso’s surface area have become a significant subject of global climate change research. Through satellite remote sensing data, scientists have discovered that since the 1970s, the lake’s area has expanded by over 600 square kilometers—a remarkably significant increase attributed primarily to accelerated glacial melting and increased precipitation caused by global warming. In 2014, Siling Tso and its surrounding lake cluster were designated as the “Siling Tso National Nature Reserve,” with primary conservation targets being rare water birds such as the black-necked crane and the highland lake wetland ecosystem.

How To Get There

Siling Tso is located in the border region between Shenza County and Bangge County of the Nagqu Prefecture, approximately 570 kilometers from Lhasa. The most common route from Lhasa proceeds north along the G109 National Highway (Qinghai-Tibet Highway) to Nagqu city, then turns southwest toward Bangge County or Shenza County to reach the lake area. The total driving time requires approximately 2 days, with an overnight stop recommended in either Nagqu or Bangge county town.

As Siling Tso is situated deep in the interior of northern Tibet, surrounding roads consist mainly of national highways and county roads, with some sections being unpaved dirt tracks or basic surfaces. Self-driving or chartering a vehicle is the primary transportation method, and a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended. Siling Tso has no scenic area entrance gates or ticket offices and is an entirely open natural landscape. Visitors can choose suitable spots along the roadside to approach the lakeshore for viewing and photography.

Travel Tips

  1. Climate Conditions: Siling Tso is located on the northern Tibetan plateau above 4,500 meters elevation. The climate is cold and dry year-round with consistently strong winds. Even in summer, daytime temperatures typically reach only 10 to 15 degrees Celsius, while nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing. Windproof warm clothing and sun protection gear are absolute essentials.
  2. Birdwatching Season: The optimal birdwatching period at Siling Tso runs from May through September. During summer, the lake's islands and wetland areas host large concentrations of water birds, including the black-necked crane (a Class I nationally protected species). When observing birds, please maintain a safe distance and avoid disturbing the flocks. Binoculars and telephoto lenses are highly recommended.
  3. Supplies and Accommodation: Tourist service facilities are essentially nonexistent around Siling Tso. The nearest accommodation and supply points are Bangge county town or Shenza county town, located approximately 100 to 150 kilometers from the lake area. Ensure adequate fuel, drinking water, and food supplies before departure. Mobile phone signal coverage in the lake area is unreliable.
  4. Ecological Protection: Siling Tso is a National Nature Reserve. Please strictly observe all reserve management regulations. Do not leave any litter along the lakeshore, and do not drive vehicles into wetland or grassland areas in order to protect the fragile highland ecosystem.
